In an evaluation of the annual reports from the supervisory authority on ice cream in 2019, labeling was the main issue of complaint.

The classic example was the incorrect labeling of vanilla ice cream. The designation may only be used if real vanilla is actually present. If it is not, the designation is "ice cream with vanilla flavor".

Other typical reasons for complaints were violations of labeling regulations, such as missing allergen labeling or notices on azo dyes. Misleading practices occurred with milk ice cream with too little milk content and/or the presence of foreign fats, and fruit ice cream with too little fruit content.

In the ice cream samples investigated in Bremen, focusing on pathogens and hygiene parameters, no salmonella or listeria were thankfully found. However, 24% of the samples were criticized for exceeding hygiene parameters.
