Microbiological Contamination of Vegan Cheese Alternatives
Vegan cheese substitute products are produced through fermentation. During this process, potential pathogens can proliferate. In 2022, there were outbreaks in France linked to listeria in vegan cheese alternatives.
To better assess the microbiological risk posed by cheese alternatives, 375 vegan nut-based cheese alternatives were analyzed as part of the Nationwide Monitoring Plan (NWP).
Pathogens were detected in only a few samples. No salmonella, coagulase-positive staphylococci, or listeria were found in any of the samples. Only eight packages showed presumptive Bacillus cereus, and one package showed Clostridium perfringens.
The BVL nevertheless advises sensitive consumer groups (pregnant women, the elderly, or immunocompromised individuals) to avoid vegan cheese alternatives and wants to raise awareness that potential pathogens may also be present in this product group.
In our laboratory, the BAV Institute, we regularly conduct microbiological tests.
