Microbiological Hazard from Cosmetics – Analysis of Cases Reported in the RAPEX System

As announced, after the statistical evaluation of RAPEX notifications on cosmetic products, we would like to take a closer look at specific conspicuous product groups and hazards.

From January to mid-November 2017, alone 6 out of the 54 reported cosmetic products were notified due to a microbiological hazard. In particular, very high total colony counts (>3000 CFU/g) led to the complaints. In two cases, it was undesirable germs that led to the notification in the RAPEX system. The microorganisms Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pluralibacter gergoviae were identified in the products.

All reported products were consequently withdrawn from the market by the distributor. Additionally, three products were recalled from consumers.
