Microbiologically non-compliant cosmetic products in RAPEX

Again and again, cosmetic products with increased germ counts and/or potentially pathogenic microorganisms are found in the European Union's rapid alert system (RAPEX).

Currently, a product is listed that, in addition to an increased germ count, contains the germ Pseudomonas putida. It cannot be ruled out that this bacterium from the family of pseudomonads can cause serious infections, especially in children or immunosuppressed individuals.

The European Cosmetics Regulation EC 1223/2009 requires safe and thus also microbiologically impeccable products. In DIN EN ISO 17516, in addition to maximum levels for the total aerobic mesophilic germ count, the absence of specified microorganisms is required. These include the germs Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. Other potentially pathogenic germs - such as Pseudomonas putida in this case - must also not be present.

Regularly have both your final products and raw materials checked for microbiological purity. The BAV Institute conducts all relevant and legally required microbiological tests for you.
