Microbiologically suspicious cosmetic products in the EU rapid alert system – RAPEX
Time and again, cosmetics are reported in the EU's rapid alert system (RAPEX) due to increased levels of microorganisms – mostly bacteria. The consequence is usually the withdrawal of the goods from the market or even a public recall.
Cosmetics must be microbiologically safe and harmless. This includes compliance with the maximum levels of bacteria, yeasts, and molds specified in DIN EN ISO 17516, as well as the absence of the four so-called specified microorganisms in 1g of product:
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Escherichia coli
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Candida albicans
Last but not least, proof of microbiological safety, including the testing of microbiological stability through the preservative efficacy test (PET), is an essential component of a product's safety report. This is a requirement of the European Cosmetics Regulation EC No 1223/2009.
If you have questions about the microbiological analysis of your products or would like them to be tested quickly and reliably, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
