MicrobiologicalRisksOfBarSoaps–ANewSOFWProfessionalArticle
In the current issue of the journal SOFW (January/February 2021), a technical article titled “Microbiological Risks in the Use of Bar Soaps” has been published. The article was authored by Mr. Eigener and Mr. Neumayr, both of whom are members of the working group “Microbiology and Operational Hygiene” of the DGK (German Society for Cosmetic Science).
This working group is led by Ms. Nussbaum from the BAV Institute.
The article essentially addresses the question of whether a Preservative Challenge Test (PCT) is necessary when preparing the safety report for bar soaps. The PCT is generally conducted according to ISO 11930.
Bar soaps are usually classified as “low-risk-products” microbiologically due to their low water activity (aW value) (classification according to ISO 29621). The growth of microorganisms in or on the product is not expected. Conducting a PCT to prove microbiological stability is neither purposeful nor required.
Further aspects of the risk classification of such products are explained in the current article. If you have questions regarding the risk classification of products or general questions about the microbiological testing of products, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
You can view the article through the current issue of SOFW or also here.
