Microbiological stability of cosmetic products more important than ever

Microbiological stability of cosmetic products more important than ever

The microbiological stability of cosmetics is a central component of the overall stability of cosmetic products and their safety. Only with sufficient microbiological stability are consumers protected from risks due to contamination when using a product.

This is also reflected in the fact that the Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 requires a so-called preservation efficacy test (abbreviated: PET) as part of the safety report for each new product placed on the market. Without this test, a cosmetic product may not be sold. Exceptions are possible, for example, for water-free or highly solvent-containing products.

Our institute generally conducts the PET test according to the methodology of DIN EN ISO 11930 with the following microorganisms:

Other testing methods, e.g., according to the methodology of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph.Eur.), are also possible.

Our institute conducts approximately 10,000 PET tests annually and possesses extensive expertise in this field. Through our "myBAV" sample portal, you receive all interim and final results quickly and directly. Since the test itself takes about five to six weeks, the transmission of interim results is very important.

Do you have questions regarding the microbiological stability of your products, the PET, or whether a PET is necessary for your product?

No problem, feel free to contact us anytime, we are happy to help!
