MisleadingFoodLabeling–ServingSizesUsedFor"Beautifying"
According to a survey published by consumer protection agencies in 2017, the voluntary portion information provided by manufacturers often does not match actual eating habits. Consumers tend to eat significantly more than the portion size indicated on food packaging.
Klöckner is also focusing on clearer food labeling to promote healthier nutrition. "Fudging the numbers and sugarcoating must not be allowed," says the CDU politician. However, there is still "room for improvement" in the clarity and truth of information on packaging - for example, regarding nutritional information for certain portion sizes. For instance, the stated size of a portion of cornflakes or muesli "often has little to do with realistic consumption behavior." Consumer advocates have long criticized the fact that manufacturers specify too small quantities for which a caloric content is stated. The usually too small indicated portions suggest low sugar and fat values to consumers.
