The National Reduction and Innovation Strategy for Sugar, Fats, and Salt in Processed Foods (NRI) was adopted by the German government in early 2018. The goals to be achieved by 2025 include:

To implement this, the legislator decided against regulations and for a voluntary agreement with food manufacturers. Now, in April 2020, nearly two years after the determination, the progress in achieving these goals was recorded and published by the government.

The conducted monitoring indicates in almost all areas that the voluntary approach seems to be working. For "crispy cereal products chocolate with children's optics", for example, a statistically significant reduction in sugar content of 17% can be found compared to the baseline survey in 2016. Similar values are also obtained for other product groups.

Christoph Minhoff, General Manager of the German Food Association, also commented: “We are pleased with the initial monitoring results, as we must not forget that it is April 2020 and the target agreements should not be fully implemented for another five years. In view of the many other challenges our industry faces, we are already thanking every single company for its commitment.”
