Mono-n-hexyl phthalate - provisional TDI derived
Mono-n-hexyl phthalate (MnHexP) is a metabolic degradation product that has been detected in urine samples from children. Possible starting substances are phthalate compounds (including di-n-hexyl phthalate (DnHexP)), which can commonly be found as impurities in cosmetics and consumer products. Phthalates are typically used as plasticizers in plastics.
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has now derived a preliminary tolerable daily intake (TDI) for humans in the context of evaluating further studies on DnHexP. The preliminary TDI is 63 µg/kg body weight per day.
In this light, the analytical findings of MnHexP in children's urine were also reassessed, as the estimated daily intake of DnHexP via MnHexP levels shows that the TDI is only exhausted to a very small extent. Therefore, the detected concentrations of MnHexP do not give cause for increased concern.
The analytical plasticizer spectrum at BAV includes DnHexP and 30 other substances.
