Mycotoxins in Plant-Based Drinks
The Max Rubner Institute (MRI) has examined various plant-based drinks for their content of various mycotoxins such as Aflatoxin B and Fusarium toxins. Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by molds.
These can be found as contaminants in plant products and raw materials such as grains, nuts, and almonds. In high doses, these toxins can cause acute gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, as well as headaches and fever.
Through contaminated raw materials, the metabolic products can also transfer to processed products like oat, soy, or almond drinks.
While mycotoxins were detectable in only a few samples of soy drinks, 23 out of 24 examined almond drink samples and 33 out of 37 examined oat drink samples contained measurable levels of mycotoxins.
The BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) points out that further studies to collect representative data on mycotoxins in plant-based drinks are needed to better assess the health risks for the population.
At the BAV Institute, we conduct mycotoxin analyses.
