Food fraud is now being monitored even more closely

On December 14 and 15, 2017, around 70 representatives from the chemical investigation offices of the federal states and other organizations involved in food control, as well as employees of the Max Rubner Institute, met to determine which topics with the highest priority should be addressed in the new National Reference Center for the Authenticity and Integrity of the Food Chain (NRZ-EIL).

The reference center, which will combat for the assurance of food authenticity through various research endeavors and especially through the coordination of all previous activities by those involved in the field of food fraud, is currently in the planning and development phase. The NRZ-EIL will be located at the MRI site in Kulmbach. Scientists from all MRI locations and research areas will contribute in their respective fields to efficiently address the challenge posed by such a broad subject area.

Many participants of the 1st expert workshop, who traveled from across Germany, emphasized how important it is to have a common contact and coordination point in Germany with the NRZ-EIL. The experts assessed the establishment of joint databases as particularly urgent, though very challenging and costly to implement, and tied to this the clarification of mutual access rights to existing data sets. Even at the first meeting, the highly motivated and competent participants ensured that this 1st expert workshop became a complete success and an essential step in the implementation of the plans by BMEL and MRI concerning the establishment of the NRZ-EIL.
