National report on foodborne disease outbreaks published

The data on foodborne disease outbreaks in Germany is collected, reported, and transmitted by regulatory authorities to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

Based on the collected data, the BVL and RKI have now published a joint national report for the year 2016.

A total of 397 foodborne disease outbreaks were reported. These resulted in 2508 illnesses, 256 hospitalizations, and 4 deaths. About half of the outbreaks were caused by the pathogen Campylobacter, 23% by Salmonella.
