New ALTS – Decision: Reference dose for the assessment of food with the indication "free from …" or similar formulations

The latest regulations of the ALTS indicate that a risk assessment is required when the content of the specified allergenic substance (XY) can be quantitatively determined in a food labeled as "free from XY" or a product with a similar designation.

Assessment in accordance with Article 14 (2) letter a in conjunction with paragraph 4 letter c of the Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 is generally required when the expected (once ingested) amount of the relevant allergenic substance due to the portion size exceeds the reference dose relevant for allergy sufferers.

The risk assessment is based on the reference dose ED01. A table based on the reference dose ED01 contains the necessary parameters, calculation bases, and examples for risk assessment when determining allergen levels in foods that are advertised as "free from..." or with similar formulations.

At BAV Institute, we regularly conduct the investigation of allergens and other microbiological examinations. We provide you with fast and reliable results.
