NewBasicOrganicRegulation(EU)2018/848effectiveasof01.01.2022

On January 1, 2022 – one year later than planned – the new Basic Organic Regulation (EU) No. 2018/848 comes into force.

For organic food, only natural flavor extracts derived from food and natural flavors from the named raw material (e.g., natural lemon flavor) may be used. Flavors are included in the calculation of ingredients of agricultural origin.

The use of ingredients or substances containing technically produced nanomaterials in organic food is not permitted.

Organic raw materials and pre-packaged organic products may continue to be sold without time restriction beyond January 1, 2022. This also applies to semi-finished products, but further processing must be carried out according to the new rules.

The conventional ingredients previously allowed in Annex IX VO (EU) No. 889/2008 may still be used up to a weight proportion of 5% at the time of processing until December 31, 2023.
