The BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) in Berlin has published an opinion No. 031/2021 titled "Tattoo Inks: Minimum Requirements and Testing Methods".
This document describes minimum requirements and testing methods for tattoo inks. Furthermore, it also addresses the topics of toxicological testing requirements and the assessment of exposure.
The following possible contaminants are listed, among others:
- Azo pigments
- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
- Solvents such as Benzene, Toluene, Xylenes
- N-Nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA)
- Heavy metals such as Mercury, Nickel, Tin, Antimony, Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Chromium (VI)
- Formaldehyde
