NewOriginLabelingForUnpackagedMeat

Since February 1, 2024, the Food Information Implementation Regulation (LMIDV) mandates through the inserted § 4b that the origin of unpackaged, unprocessed pork, sheep, goat, and poultry meat must be labeled in Germany. This is particularly important at service counters or at the butcher, but also in farm shops and at weekly markets.
This labeling must be made available to the end consumer clearly, prominently, and legibly before the purchase is completed. The origin information can be provided on a sign on the food, a notice, or another written or electronic information.
As with packaged meat, information about the country of rearing and slaughter is mandatory, e.g. "Reared in: Italy, Slaughtered in: Germany." If an animal has lived in the same country from birth to slaughter, the labeling can state, for example, "Origin Germany."
