New Ph. Eur. Chapter on Essential Oils
In the latest edition of Pharmeuropa (32.2), the general Ph. Eur. Monograph "Essential Oils" has been completely revised. The newly included Ph. Eur. chapter 5.30 Monographs on Essential Oils sets out the requirements for essential oils, such as potential contamination by contaminants. For example, limit values for the heavy metals (Ph. Eur. 2.4.27) cadmium, lead, and mercury are explicitly proposed.
The entry of impurities from heavy metals, pesticides, and aflatoxins in essential oils is closely related to the type of contamination, the origin of the plant material used in manufacturing, or the production processes. The risk is higher in cold-pressed oils compared to distilled oils.
The BAV Institute, as part of the international Tentamus laboratory group, offers chemical analyses, including tests for heavy metals, pesticide residues, and mycotoxins (e.g., Aflatoxin B), in addition to microbiological examinations. These examinations are performed in GMP-approved testing laboratories.
