New Benchmark from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for Dioxins and Dioxin-Like Polychlorinated Biphenyls
“Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs are, health-wise, undesirable substances but are found everywhere in the environment. Thus, their entry into the food chain cannot be avoided. An acute health risk from the intake of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs via food is practically excluded. Whether long-term intake can lead to health impairments is associated with numerous scientific uncertainties. In general, the exposure of people in Germany to dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs has significantly decreased in the last 30 years.”
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has derived a new health-related guideline value for dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs). This is seven times lower than the previous guideline value. You can learn more at www.bfr.bund.de.
