New SCCS Opinion on Aluminum in Cosmetics – SCCS/1662/23
On December 14, 2023, a new (preliminary) opinion by the SCCS was published regarding the use of aluminum in cosmetics. This is already the fourth opinion on aluminum (Submission IV). As in the previous opinions, the question of the safety of cosmetics containing aluminum compounds is explained.
The SCCS concludes that cosmetics containing aluminum are safe if, among other things, the following maximum values of aluminum are observed (others are listed in Table 1 of the opinion):
- Aftershave: 2.15%
- DeoRollOn – Gel: 6.18%
- DeoSpray – Anti-perspirant: 3.24%
- Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette: 0.05%
- Shampoo: 7.14%
- Toothpaste: 3.18%
In addition to the above limits, for sprayable products, the proportion of particles with a diameter of less than 10μm may be up to 20% of all particles.
Aluminum is not considered a CRM substance in category 1A or 1B.
The BAV Institute within the international Tentamus laboratory group analyzes aluminum and many other metals in cosmetics quickly and reliably for you.
