New Professional Article in the Journal sof w - Skin Microbiome and Cosmetics
The article “Skin Microbiome and Cosmetics - a Review” was published in the current March issue of the trade journal sofw. This extensive and highly topical contribution was among others written by Andrea Keck-Wilhelm (CVUA Karlsruhe) and Rainer Simmering (Henkel AG).
Both authors are also part of the DGK working group Microbiology and Operational Hygiene, which is currently led by Joelle Nussbaum from the BAV Institute.
The article covers the following topics over 9 pages:
- The skin microbiome and its significance
- Definition of probiotics, postbiotics, and prebiotics
- Are there “good“ microorganisms?
- Regulatory aspects from Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009
- Cosmetic effects and claims related to the skin microbiome
- Do preservatives affect the skin microbiome?
In general, it becomes clear that the topic of the skin microbiome and its possible interaction with cosmetic products is very complex. Many aspects are still unclear or require further research. What is certain is that cosmetics have an influence on the skin microbiome.
