New testing method for species identification – significantly more sensitive multicopy method
The detection of animal species plays a major role in testing meat products for product adulteration and compliance with religious requirements. At the latest with the horsemeat scandal of 2013, where horsemeat was detected in beef lasagna, the issue has gained significant attention in Germany. With the help of species detection, such fraud cases can be identified.
For vegetarian and especially for vegan products, the exclusion of animal components is essential. It is also important for Muslim and Jewish consumers to know whether products meet religious requirements.
By switching methods to the significantly more sensitive multicopy methods, where mitochondrial DNA is detected, lower detection limits can be achieved.
New animal species with the significantly more sensitive method:
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Horse
- Mammals and poultry
For pork, beef, buffalo, goat, sheep, duck, Muscovy duck, goose, and ostrich, mitochondrial detection is already used.
