Re-regulation of N-Methylanthranilate (M-N-MA) in Cosmetics

With the Regulation (EU) 2022/135, the substance N-Methylanthranilate is newly regulated. To date, this substance is not subject to maximum quantity regulation when used in cosmetics and may be freely used. It is used as a fragrance ingredient in many shampoos, soaps, and other cosmetics.

In a previous opinion of the SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) from 2021, a maximum concentration was already proposed, which is now mentioned in the amendment to the Regulation (EC) 1223/2009.

In the future, this substance may only be used as follows:

-          Leave-on products: maximum 0.1% (prohibition for sunscreen products)

-          Rinse-off products: maximum 0.2%

From August 21, 2022, cosmetics that do not comply with the above limits may no longer be made available on the union market. From November 21, 2022, such products may no longer be sold.
