Noroviruses in frozen oysters: public recall

A Berlin-based food entrepreneur is currently recalling frozen oysters due to the detection of noroviruses.

The analysis of viruses in food is still in its infancy even in official testing laboratories. Based on the work of Prof. Mäde in Saxony-Anhalt, methods for detecting hepatitis A and E as well as noroviruses have been established. Ultimately, however, it is the case that shellfish and oysters, as they are cultivated and harvested near the coast, can always be dangerous carriers of various pathogens. These marine organisms are specifically designed to filter large quantities of water in search of nutrients. Therefore, consuming raw is generally not recommended!

Among others, salmonella and Campylobacter bacteria also occur regularly. Our advice for quality assurance: At least test for these bacterial pathogens.
