Noroviruses and Hepatitis A viruses in frozen berries
The BfR has published a statement on "Preventing the Occurrence of Viruses in Frozen Berries".
Frozen berries have repeatedly caused outbreaks of diseases with noroviruses and hepatitis A viruses in recent years. Particularly severe was the 2012 norovirus outbreak in Germany, in which almost 11,000 children and adolescents fell ill. At that time, contaminated frozen strawberries from China were identified as the cause.
To prevent these cases, the importance of hygiene rules during cultivation and harvesting of the fruits was particularly recognized. Furthermore, the BfR especially recommends that vulnerable groups of people always thoroughly heat frozen berries before consumption.
