Novel Food: Edible Insects on the Rise
Edible insects fall within the scope of the Novel Food Regulation (EU) No. 2015/2285. According to a transitional arrangement, edible insects and insect-based foods that were legally on the market in the EU before January 1, 2018, may continue to be marketed if an authorization application was submitted to the EU Commission before January 1, 2019.
Approved edible insects include, among others, the larvae of the shiny black grain beetle, the African migratory locust, and the dried mealworm. Now, official food monitoring faces the challenge of legally assessing this new product category – this assessment ranges from species identification of insects in all developmental stages, to safety evaluation, labeling including allergen information, and establishment in routine analytics.
