Number of salmonellosis cases in the EU on the rise again

The number of Salmonella Enteritidis infections acquired in the EU has increased by 3% since 2014, according to the report prepared by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

In 2016, 94,530 cases of salmonellosis in humans were reported in the EU. Salmonella Enteritidis, the most common type of salmonella, was responsible for 59% of all salmonellosis cases originating in the EU and is primarily associated with the consumption of eggs, egg products, and poultry meat. Salmonella in eggs led to the highest number of outbreak cases (1,882).
