Nutri-Score: Change of the calculation basis at the beginning of 2024
The Nutri-Score is a voluntary nutrition label designed to help consumers choose healthy foods and drinks when shopping. It uses a five-level scale ranging from a dark green A to a red E. A total score is calculated from the nutrients to classify individual products.
Due to recurring criticism of the Nutri-Score's assessment, the calculation method has been adjusted.
In summary, the following changes were made:
- Sugar, salt, sweeteners, and low dietary fiber content are rated more strictly
- A high protein content is rated better
- The classification as a drink has been changed
- Nuts and oils receive their own category
Since the beginning of the year, the new calculation basis can be used. However, there is a transition period until December 31, 2025.
A detailed list of changes can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
