Nutri-Score: first draft to amend the Food Information Implementation Regulation

At the end of November, the first draft for the recommendation and legitimization of the Nutri-Score labeling in Germany was announced.

The Nutri-Score labeling is already recommended and practically implemented in France and Belgium. The Nutri-Score must first be legitimized through national regulation, as it is used for labeling and evaluating foods and would be prohibited as a nutrition and/or health-related claim without legitimization.

The legitimization occurs through Article 23 Paragraph 1 of the Claims Regulation (Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006).

The draft regulation for § 3a of the Food Information Implementation Ordinance is simple. It essentially states that foods with the Nutri-Score label may be placed on the market and that the use of the label is voluntary.

The regulation is expected not to come into force before July 2020. We will keep you updated on further developments.
