Ochratoxin A – Evaluation of Health Risk
Recently, EFSA has updated its 2006 opinion on Ochratoxin A (OTA) in food. OTA is a mycotoxin produced by molds of the Aspergillus and Penicillium genera and is found in most food categories. It is regularly detected in cereals, dried fruit, as well as in coffee and wine.
EFSA concluded that OTA poses a risk to public health for most consumer groups. The findings of the updated opinion are part of the ongoing discussion by the European Commission on maximum OTA levels in food.
Currently, the Maximum Levels for Contaminants Regulation (Regulation (EC) 1881/2006) specifies maximum levels for food between 0.50 µg/kg for infant food and 80 µg/kg for licorice extract.
