Öko-Test: Milk Chocolate – Heavy Contamination with Mineral Oil Components
In the Öko-Test issue from December 2019, a total of 25 varieties of milk chocolate were tested. Only two of the products examined received the top rating "good". Below is a summary of the test parameters:
- Sensory (appearance, smell, taste, mouthfeel)
Some products were negatively noticeable in the taste test due to a barely perceptible chocolate note and weak chocolate aroma. The smell and taste of cocoa as well as a clearly perceptible chocolate note were positively rated. - Contaminants
The following contaminants were tested: mineral oil components (MOSH and MOAH), acrylamide, cadmium, and nickel. 24 out of 25 milk chocolates are partially very heavily contaminated with mineral oil components. - Microbiology
The products were tested for salmonella. None of the products were microbiologically conspicuous. - Other
Furthermore, the accuracy of the manufacturer's information regarding cocoa content and the transparency of cocoa production were checked. The opaque cocoa production was criticized in most of the tested products.
More detailed information on the test series can be found in the Öko-Test issue No. 12/2019.
