Ökotest: Mineral Oil (MOAH, MOSH / POSH) in the Advent Calendar
In the December 2018 edition of Öko-Test, 20 advent calendars – including three organic products – were exclusively tested for saturated and aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/POSH and MOAH).
The test results are as follows:
- Aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) were detected in three products. According to the BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment), some MOAH compounds can be carcinogenic, and these mineral oil components should not be detectable in food.
- All advent calendars were contaminated with saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons MOSH/POSH; however, two of them contained only trace amounts.
Saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH) accumulate in fatty tissue or organs such as the liver and can cause health damage there. POSH are still poorly researched; they can migrate from polyolefinic oligomers (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene) and related products into food.
- "Very highly increased" levels of over 4 mg/kg of MOSH/POSH were found in four calendars.
- The remaining calendars showed "highly increased" levels of MOSH/POSH of 2-4 mg/kg or "increased" levels of 1-2 mg/kg.
More detailed information on the test series can be found in Öko-Test magazine No. 12/2018.
