Ökotest: Rusk with Mineral Oil (MOAH, MOSH / POSH)
In the October 2018 issue of Öko-Test, 15 rusks, including 6 baby rusks, were tested.
The following test parameters were examined:
- Sugar content
High sugar content of 14% each was found in two rusks. Sugar and honey were added to two baby rusks, which are already suitable for babies from six to eight months of age. - MOAH and MOSH/POSH
MOAH are aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons, some of which are carcinogenic. MOSH refers to saturated hydrocarbons from mineral oil, while POSH are saturated hydrocarbons that can migrate into food as oligomers from polyolefins (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene) and related products. Increased levels of MOSH/POSH were found in 5 rusks, one of which was also contaminated with MOAH. - Pesticides
Glyphosate, a suspected carcinogen, was detected in one rusk. In another product, five different pesticide active substances were found in harmless traces. - Other test parameters: fat pollutants, mold toxins, acrylamide, product presentation
Frequent downgrades or unsatisfactory ratings were mainly due to:
- Addition of sugar in baby rusks
- Contamination with mineral oil components: MOAH, MOSH/POSH
- Detection of pesticide residues
- For a baby rusk with added sugar, it was promoted as "particularly suitable for nibbling with the first teeth."
- Another baby rusk indicated an unrealistically small portion size of 3 g to keep the sugar content and energy values low.
- The manufacturer of a rusk advertises with "no added preservatives according to the law," which is advertising with self-evident properties.
- In an organic product, chlormequat (growth regulator) was detected with more than 0.01mg/kg.
