During a listeria outbreak in Switzerland in 2022, a total of 20 people fell ill, one of whom died. The cause was identified as smoked fish.

Listeria are widespread in the environment and can be detected on plants, in sewage systems, and in the stool of healthy and diseased animals. They are often found in raw foods (e.g., meat, poultry, milk, vegetables, fish, and seafood) but are also relevant in processed foods (e.g., meat products, smoked fish products, mixed salads).

These bacteria can cause very serious illnesses, especially in pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and sick people. The proportion of deaths is relatively high in these individuals. In the current cases in Denmark, all the deceased had pre-existing conditions.

At the BAV Institute, we regularly conduct tests for listeria. We provide you with fast and reliable results and are happy to advise you on any issues related to product safety. Our customer advisors are available to answer any questions you may have.
