Online trade with food: Europe-wide action "eFood" detects around 800 suspicious websites
The online trade of food presents ever-new challenges for food monitoring. To strengthen the authorities in this area, the European Commission has now conducted a practical test with a Europe-wide initiative: 25 EU Member States as well as Norway and Switzerland participated in the coordinated control plan “eFood” and identified a total of 779 websites offering non-compliant food products.
The action focused on food products with certain ingredients not authorized in the EU and on dietary supplements advertised with unauthorized health claims.
In total, 36 problematic German-speaking online offers were identified during the action and forwarded to the competent authorities in the federal states or member states for further examination.
In numerous cases, the electronic reporting systems RASFF and AAC operated by the EU Commission were also used for international exchange between authorities. In nearly 300 cross-border cases, the participating states' authorities were able to exchange their findings from the investigations.
To further improve the monitoring of online food trade, the EU Commission aims for an early repetition of the initiative.
