Regulation on Flavors by BMEL: New Labeling for Licorice with High Levels of Sal Ammoniac (Ammonium Chloride)
Licorice with a content of ammonium chloride of more than 20 g/ kg must be labeled in the future with notices for protection against health risks. This applies to pre-packaged and non-pre-packaged foods. This is stipulated by the new implementing regulation on flavorings and food containing flavorings (AromenDV) of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
The notices should specifically read: "Adult licorice - not children's licorice" and for even higher contents "Extra strong, adult licorice - not children's licorice" as well as "Excessive consumption may impair health especially in persons with kidney disorders".
These notices are necessary because ammonium chloride, according to the assessment of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), in higher doses can lead to acidification of the blood, as stated in the regulation of the Ministry of Nutrition.
Foods that were marketed or labeled before the effective date of this regulation can be sold off.
