In a recent statement, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) advocates for a reduction of maximum PAH levels in consumer products.
Currently, a PAH limit of 1 mg/kg applies to consumer products (e.g., clothing etc.). For toys and products for toddlers or infants, this value is a maximum of 0.5 mg/kg. These values have been valid across Europe since 2015 and are regulated by Regulation No. 1272/2013 and Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH).
The GS mark is a national certification mark and stands for “tested safety”. As part of this seal's awarding, PAH limits of 0.2 mg/kg must be adhered to.
From the BfR's perspective, this limit of 0.2 mg/kg can now be reliably met in all products with prolonged or repeated skin contact. For sufficient consumer protection, this value from the GS mark should apply to all products.
