Phosphate additives in raw, frozen kebab skewers

Phosphates are additives that may be added to food primarily for water retention to a certain extent. They increase the weight of meat, make it juicier, and bind pieces of meat together. However, studies indicate that phosphates may harm the heart, kidneys, and circulatory system.

So far, phosphates are permitted in heated doner kebab skewers. A draft regulation by the European Commission to amend the additives regulation now proposes to allow phosphates also in raw, frozen skewers. This would close an existing legal gap.

However, an objection has been raised against this draft in the Environment Committee of the European Parliament. This proposal highlights the health hazards of phosphates in food. Nevertheless, the Environment Committee's vote alone does not constitute a decision on this matter. According to the regulations, an absolute majority of Members of the European Parliament is required for this. A vote on this issue was conducted in the plenary session of the European Parliament last week, but the absolute majority was not reached. Therefore, raw, frozen doner kebab skewers may continue to be treated with phosphates.

Currently, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is also examining whether there are new scientific findings on the health risks of phosphates. The result is expected by the end of 2018.
