Phosphate additive in raw, frozen döner kebabs

Phosphate additive in raw, frozen döner kebabs

Phosphates are additives that can be added to foods primarily for water retention purposes up to a certain degree. They increase the weight of meat, make it juicier, and bind pieces of meat together. However, studies have shown that it cannot be ruled out that phosphates may harm the heart, kidneys, and circulatory system.

So far, phosphates are permitted in heated doner kebab skewers. A draft regulation by the European Commission to amend the additives regulation now intends to allow phosphates in raw, frozen skewers as well. This would close an existing legal loophole. However, this draft has been opposed by the Environment Committee of the European Parliament due to potential health risks.

The vote of the Environment Committee alone does not constitute a decision in this matter. According to regulations, an absolute majority of Members of the European Parliament is required. Currently, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is examining whether there are new scientific findings on the health risks posed by phosphates. The result is expected by the end of 2018. A decision by the European Parliament will be postponed until then.
