A ruling by the European Court of Justice, which classifies pollen from genetically modified plants as ingredients of honey, had led to the affected products being considered non-marketable without appropriate labeling. With a planned amendment to Directive 2001/110/EC on honey, the EU now aims to ensure that pollen is no longer considered as ingredients of honey.

Honey with pollen from approved genetically modified plants below the legal threshold of 0.9% should thus be marketable again in the future without a labeling requirement.
