Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in cosmetics
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can appear as residues primarily in decorative cosmetic products and affect their safety.
PAHs encompass a wide range of various substances that differ from each other in their structure and toxicology. The most well-known representative is Benzo(a)pyrene. This compound - and others - are listed in Annex II of the Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 as prohibited substances. This means that traces of these substances may only be present in amounts that are safe for health and technically unavoidable.
We test both cosmetic end products and raw materials for the content of various PAH compounds. The testing is conducted as an accredited procedure using sophisticated analytical techniques (LC/LC-GC-MS and GC-MS/MS). It will be further optimized and adjusted promptly.
Furthermore, residues of PAHs are considered when preparing safety reports. Our safety assessors also conduct this assessment for all cosmetics for you.
