Pre-cut fruits and leafy salads can be microbially contaminated

According to the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) in Berlin, there is a risk of microbial contamination in sliced fruit and pre-cut leafy salads from cultivation to packaging.

Two percent of the 344 samples of pre-cut, packaged leafy salads were contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, but only with low microbial counts that usually do not pose a health risk to humans.
