Preliminary opinion on salicylic acid by the SCCS
The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Commission, abbreviated SCCS, has published a preliminary opinion on salicylic acid, a preservative frequently used in cosmetics.
According to the EU Cosmetics Regulation VO (EC) No. 1223/2009 Annex 3, salicylic acid is currently authorized as a preservative for cosmetics with corresponding maximum concentrations. The current opinion aims to clarify to what extent the use of this substance at currently authorized maximum levels can still be considered safe. There are ongoing discussions about the safe use of preservatives.
Comments on this opinion can be submitted until November 14, including by the cosmetics industry.
