Preliminary RASFF Annual Report 2016
The European Commission has published a preliminary report on notifications from the European Rapid Alert System RASFF. Overall, the trend of recent years of increasing alerts continued in 2016 (increase of "original" alerts by 9% to 821 alerts).

In addition to the alerts, there are other "types" of notifications: information notifications, border rejections, and news. Most of the notifications came from Italy (417 notifications). Germany ranks second with 369 notifications, followed by the United Kingdom with 349 notifications. Pathogenic microorganisms were clearly the most common cause of alerts with 250 alerts, followed by composition/ingredients (93 alerts). Allergens (87 alerts), mycotoxins (82 alerts), heavy metals (78 alerts), and foreign bodies (76 alerts) followed.
The most frequently affected food categories for alerts were:
- Fruits and Vegetables
- Fish and Fish Products
- Food Supplements and Other Dietary Foods
- Meat and Meat Products
- Cereals and Bakery Products
- Poultry and Poultry Meat
- Nuts and Nut Products
- Shellfish and Crustaceans
- Milk and Dairy Products
