Preservative challenge tests – a must for newly marketed products

For all cosmetic products newly launched in the EU, as well as for products that undergo a change in formulation, formulation, or packaging, a so-called preservative challenge test (PCT) is required. This is a clear requirement of the EU Cosmetics Regulation EC No. 1223/2009 and a central part of the safety report.

According to ISO 29621, there are low-risk products from a microbiological point of view that do not have to undergo this test, such as products with very low or very high pH values or products with low water activity (aw value). In most cases, however, this testing is required.

Whether testing according to DIN EN ISO 11930 or according to the specifications of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph.Eur.) as well as customer-specific requirements, BAV Institute conducts these tests with great expertise and competence.
