Prohibited preservatives in cosmetics in RAPEX

Cosmetic products with prohibited preservatives are repeatedly reported in RAPEX. In the current case, the combination of methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (CIT) was used for a hair gel. The use of this combination of preservatives is no longer permitted for this product group (in general for all leave-on products) since 2018 according to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 (EU Cosmetics Regulation).

The mentioned preservatives have a high allergenic potential and can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Consequences of being reported in RAPEX (European rapid alert system) are product recalls or withdrawal from the market, associated with corresponding economic loss or even damage to reputation.

BAV Institute and its Tentamus laboratory partners conduct a wide range of tests for you, such as examinations using the latest measurement techniques on levels and residues of various preservatives. In addition to MIT and CIT, these include parabens, phenoxyethanol, organic acids, and many others.
