Minutes of the BfR Commission Meeting on Cosmetics – Topic Furocoumarins
The protocol of the 26th meeting of the BfR Commission for Cosmetic Products has been published. This commission advises the BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) and the BMUV (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection) in all matters concerning the safety of cosmetics as an independent panel of experts.
This time, particular focus was on the occurrence and content of furocoumarins in cosmetic end products. These substances are phototoxic and can cause severe sensitization and skin reactions. The most potent furocoumarin is 5-methoxypsoralen. Possible contents must be considered within the framework of the safety report according to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
Another point was the use of so-called PCR materials (post-consumer-recycled) as packaging materials for cosmetics.
Have your products tested for furocoumarins! The experts at BAV Institute are ready to assist you with advice and support.
