Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF): A new genetically modified rice (p35S, t-NOS, bar) in Europe
This year, reports are accumulating about a new type of genetically modified rice. The modifications are evident in the promoter sequence P-35S, the terminator sequence T-NOS, and the bar gene. Reports on this topic have already been submitted to the European Rapid Alert System (RASFF). It is still unclear what exactly has been modified in these areas and how the changes affect the rice.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) must undergo an approval process before being placed on the market in the EU. There is no such approval for the currently circulating rice variant. Therefore, it is not marketable in the EU.
The variant has so far not been detected in rice grains, but only in processed rice products such as rice flour or rice cakes.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct GMO investigations (particularly on changes associated with P-35S and T-NOS). We provide fast and reliable results. Our customer service representatives are happy to assist you with any questions you may have.
