RASFF-rapidalert: SalmonellaSenftenberginrapeseedmealfromUkraine

In Lithuania, Salmonella Senftenberg was detected in rapeseed meal from Ukraine, prompting a rapid alert from the RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) on 17/01/2024.

Salmonella is mostly transmitted through raw animal products, especially poultry, eggs, and pork. However, spices such as paprika and pepper, as well as herbs, can also be contaminated with Salmonella. In most other foods, Salmonella is rarely found.

People excrete Salmonella during an illness, but possibly for a long time afterward through the stool. These so-called “Salmonella shedders” are not allowed to work in the production and distribution of highly perishable food, as otherwise, in the case of inadequate personal hygiene, there can be a transmission to food.

In foods, Salmonella is undesirable. Ready-to-eat foods contaminated with Salmonella are classified as hazardous to health, as these pathogens can cause severe gastrointestinal infections, which can have serious consequences, particularly for young children, pregnant women, the elderly, or ill persons.

On our homepage, we have published a profile on Salmonella in which we have summarized the most common questions and important information on this pathogen. You can find it here. Additionally, you'll find a leaflet on the infectious disease salmonellosis on the website of the RKI (Robert Koch Institute).

At the BAV Institute, we regularly conduct testing for Salmonella. We provide you with fast and reliable results.

For any questions, our customer advisors are more than happy to assist you.
