For almost a quarter of a year, Russia has been waging war against Ukraine. The war and the Corona lockdown in China are hindering international logistics. The food sector is significantly affected by this.
About 80% of sunflower oil comes from Russia and Ukraine. It is likely that EU supply will soon be compromised.
Due to the scarcity, the likelihood of adulteration is high, increasing the risk of contamination with allergens, mycotoxins, pesticides, and other contaminants. Possible risks for sunflower oil include:
- Adulteration with inferior qualities (refined oil, rancid oil)
- Adulteration with foreign oils or inferior qualities of foreign oils (see Gutter Oil Scandal)
- Mycotoxins
- MOSH/MOAH
- Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
Sowing is currently taking place in Ukraine, but of course on a much-reduced scale. In addition, agricultural fields are increasingly contaminated with unexploded ordnance and mines, leading to a significantly reduced harvest in 2022.
The food industry now faces the challenge of quickly identifying new sources for sourcing goods while continuing to keep an eye on authenticity to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
